Thailand is set to host the 33rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games from December 9-20, 2025. This event will be the largest in the history of the games, with over 12,500 athletes from 11 nations competing in 50 different sports. This is the seventh time Thailand has hosted this major regional sporting event.
The games will take place across several provinces, including Bangkok, Chonburi, and Songkhla, which were chosen as the main host cities. However, due to recent flooding, events originally planned for Songkhla will now be moved to Bangkok and Chonburi to ensure the safety of athletes and the readiness of the venues. Bangkok will host 34 sports, while Chonburi will host 18. The opening and closing ceremonies will both be held at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.
This year's sports program is the most aligned with the Olympics in SEA Games history, featuring 574 medal events. In addition to popular Olympic sports like swimming and athletics, the games will also include regional sports such as sepak takraw and muay Thai. For the first time, winter sports like ice hockey and figure skating will be included, thanks to new facilities in the region.
The motto for the 2025 SEA Games is "Ever Forward," which represents the spirit of progress and cooperation among ASEAN nations. The official mascot, named "The Sans," symbolizes the unity and connection of the ASEAN community. With a target of 241 gold medals, host country Thailand aims to win the overall championship. Other nations, including Vietnam and Indonesia, are also preparing to compete for top positions.
Tickets for the events are now available for online booking. The games are seen as an important opportunity for Thailand to showcase its culture, hospitality, and modern sporting facilities, while also serving as a key preparation event for athletes ahead of 2028 Olympics.
